Description	:	August Karl Huwe was first of eleven children born to Joannes Ludvig "Johan" Huwe and Friedericka Amelia (Krueger) Huwe. He was born in Britanstin, Province of Posen (Prussia), Germany, on October 28, 1855 and was later baptized in his home country. ~ Posen was once a city and province of Prussia but it is now part of Poland, with the Polish name of Poznan. The city of Poznan is located in west central Poland about 100 miles east of the border between Poland and East Germany and about 150 miles east of Berlin, Germany. ~ Poland ceased to exist as a nation late in the 1700's when all of its lands were divided among Prussia, Austria and Russia. However, Poland was re-established as a nation as a result of treaties following WWI. Part of the new Poland was formed from lands taken from Prussia and the unified Germany. ~ The eleven children born to Joannes Ludvig "Johan" Huwe and Friedericka Amelia (Krueger) Huwe were as follows: August Karl Huwe (1855 – 1933) Emil Augustus Huwe (1858 – 1915) Otto Huwe (1860 – 1938) Rudolph Emanuel Huwe (1865 – 1946) Albert Karl Huwe (1867 – 1912) Emma Huwe (1868 – 1868) Richard Robert Huwe (1870 – 1956) Gustav Adolf Huwe (1873 – 1951) Theodore Wilhelm Huwe (1876 – 1959) Wilhelm Heinrich "Henry" Huwe (1879 – 1960) Hermann Huwe (1880 – 1897) In 1868, August's parents, Ludvig and Friedericka, immigrated to America with him and the rest of their children. The journey took six weeks and was especially difficult due to stormy seas, during which time their only daughter, Emma, died and was buried at sea. Upon arriving in the United States, the Huwe family first settled in Penn Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. Records indicate August was confirmed during this time. After ten years, August and his family moved to Effington Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Two years later, August moved to Leaf Valley Township, Douglas County, Minnesota, where he purchased land, built a log cabin, and began establishing his homestead. [No. 2195 - Receivers office at Fergus Falls, MN, Jan. 12, 1881 - Received from August Huwe of Douglas County, MN, the sum of Three Hundred Dollars, being in full for the SW 1/4 of Section 9 in Township No. 130 N, of Range No. 38 W. Containing 160 acres. 80 acres at $2.50 and 80 acres at $1.25. /s/John H. Allen, Receiver. Filed for record Jan. 14, 1881.] August first met Hannah Engfer on the day of her confirmation, and the two were married shortly thereafter on February 12, 1884, at Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota. The daughter of Johann Frederick Engfer and Christine Albertine Caroline (Wenzel) Engfer, Johannah C "Hanna" Engfer was born on December 24, 1867, at Belle Plain, Scott County, Minnesota. In total, ten children were born to August and Hannah: Wilhelm Edward "Will" Huwe (1885 – 1974) Emil Albert Huwe (1887 – 1965) Hermann August Huwe (1888 – 1960) Martha Johannah (Huwe) Johnson (1890 – 1932) Heinrich August Karl "Henry" Huwe (1894 – 1967) Emma Marie Louise (Huwe) Huwe (1896 – 1990) Ludwig Walter Johann "Walter" Huwe (1898 – 1979) Theodor Rudolph Richard Huwe (1901 – 1979) Klara Pauline Eleonore "Clara" (Huwe) Reinertson (1903 – 1994) Lydia Rosa Anna (Huwe) Olson (1906 – 1983) In 1910, August and Hannah decided to move their family farther west to Bristol, South Dakota. During the trip, their sons William and Herman drove the team of four horses which pulled their wagon containing a load of oats, a barrel of smoked meat, and a shotgun with two additional horses tied to the rear of the wagon. The trip west took William and Herman about four days. The rest of the family followed by train, stopping along the way in Ortonville, Minnesota, to visit August's third brother, Otto. They then continued on, arriving safely in Bristol, South Dakota, where they purchased a farm four miles southwest of town. That same year, they joined the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol and remained members there the rest of their lives. August Karl Huwe died in Bristol, Day, South Dakota, on July 19, 1933; and Hannah Engfer Huwe died in Bristol, Day, South Dakota, on November 8, 1944.
