ANOTHER ONE OF FIRST SETTLERS IN NORFOLK DIES August Kaun, Member of the Original Colony, Passes Away at Home Here Walked from Wisconsin 11-year-old Boys' Duties Were to Drive Cattle of the Original Pioneers, Who Found Only Indians and Prairie Here The rapid thinning ranks of the original settlers in Norfolk were decreased by one more Friday morning, when August Kaun died at his home at 513 South Fifth street at the age of 72 years, with complications due to old age. Mr. Kaun came to Norfolk with the original colony from Wisconsin when he was 13 years old. Forty families in the original colony drove in covered wagons and ox teams from their homes in Wisconsin to the site of their new homes on the banks of the Northfork river, which scene the American Legion will depict in its pageant at the coming pioneer day celebration. These Wisconsin settlers were real pioneers and suffered the hardships common to those indomitable spirits who were driven on westward to find new homes in the wilderness when settlements began to encroach too closely upon their wide domains. Walked Most of Way Mr. Kaun walked nearly all of the way from Wisconsin to Norfolk as there was no room in the wagons for him. His job was to drive the cattle. It required about six weeks to make the trip. When they arrived here they found only an indian camp and rough prairie. They all took up homesteads around the present site of Norfolk. Mr. Kaun's father, Jacob Kaun lived on the old homestead until 1909, when he retired and moved to his Norfolk home at 513 South Fifth street, where he lived until his death. Mr. Kaun was born on Aug. 11, 1853, at Langen Hagen, Germany, in the year 1864, at the age of 11 years, he came to America with his parents, who settled at Watertown, Wis. Two years later the family moved to the present site of Norfolk with the Wisconsin colonists. Married in 1877 In 1877 Mr. Kaun was married to Bertha Schulz and took over the homestead, his father having retired from the farm when the son was married. Beside the widow, he leaves two sons and two daughters, Art Kaun of Norfolk and Earnest* Kaun, living on the farm four miles north of Norfolk, and Mrs. Charles Bernhardt of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. H. R. Weich of Hoskins. One son died in infancy in 1894 and two sons, Otto and Reinhardt, died in 1918 during the influenza epidemic. There is also one sister, Mrs. E. W. Zutz of Norfolk, and nineteen grandchildren. "Funeral services for August Kaun will be held at the family home at 2 o'clock Tuesday and at Christ Lutheran church at 2:30, the Rev. M. E. Mayer officiating. Burial will be in the new Lutheran cemetery." ---------------------------------------------- The following was found in"The Norfolk Daily News", Wednesday, August 19, 1925 on page 2 and is fully quoted below. "August Kaun Many old settlers gathered again Tuesday, for the last rites for one of their number, funeral services being held for August Kaun at the family home, 513 South Fifth street at 2 o'clock and at Christ Lutheran church at 2:30, the Rev. M. E. Mayer officiating. Pallbearers were: Herman Buettow, Fred Dedderman, Mr. Ertzner, William Klentz, Joseph Fisher and William Winter. Burial was made in the new Lutheran cemetery. Mr. Kaun was born in Germany and came to the United States when 11 years old, settling at Watertown, Wis., and two years later moved with his parents to the Norfolk vicinity. He was 72 years old at the time of his death, having celebrated his birthday two days previous. Among those who survived are the widow and the following sons and daughters: Arthur and Ernest Kaun, Norfolk; Mrs. Littie Winch, Hoskins and Mrs. Clara Bernhardt, Denver, Colo." **note the last name Winch should be Weich.
