Read More	Lone Tree Reporter, Lone Tree, Iowa, Thursday, May 27, 1920 August Kranz, an aged and highly respected resident of this community, passed away at his home in Lone Tree early Monday morning after an illness of short duration. He had reached the age of 72 years, 3 months and 20 days. When Mr. Kranz was reported ill two weeks ago, his condition was not thought to be serious, and his many friends hoped that he would soon recover. His condition however, soon began to grow more serious, his strength growing weaker until Monday morning, when death came. Realizing that the time of his departure was near, Mr. Kranz called his children to his bedside shortly before the end came to bid them his last good bye. August Kranz, son of Frederick and Sophia Kranz, was born in Prussia Feb. 4, 1848. When he was 12 years of age he came to America with his parents, and after spending three months in New York the family moved to Muscatine, where they resided for three or four years, moving from there to Rock Island County, at which place the parents resided until their death. Mr. Kranz began and ended his business life as a farmer. In 1879 he moved to Fremont township on the old homestead northeast of Lone Tree, where he lived until 1909, when he moved to Lone Tree, purchasing a residence in Sunny Side addition, which he occupied until his death. On September 5, 1872 Mr. Kranz was married to Katherine Stamm of Rock Island county. To this union were born six children, five of whom with Mrs. Kranz, his wife, survive to mourn his loss. They are as follows: George of Iowa City; Mary, wife of Fred Lenz of Lincoln township; Louisa, wife of Frank Krall of Louisa county; Minnie, wife of Johonas Joens of Lone Tree; Clarence, who resides on the old homestead northeast of Lone Tree. The first death in the family came last February, when Emma, the wife of Joseph Kral, was taken, passing away after submitting to an operation. The loss of this daughter was a sudden and severe blow to both parents and children, and Mr. Kranz's friends and acquaintances have remarked that Mr. Kranz has n o t been the same since the death of Mrs. Kral. Mr. Kranz was a member of Omega Lodge No. 728 of Lone Tree, and has been a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. Mr. Kranz always took considerable interest in community affairs. For a number of years he served as park commissioner in Lone Tree, and he also served as constable for several terms. He was always ready to answer every call that came to him as a citizen, neighbor, friend or brother, and he will be greatly missed throughout the community. Funeral services were held at the Reformed church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. E. D. Lantz. Burial was made in the Lone Tree cemetery. The pallbearers were: H. C. Buell, J. H. Lingo, Jake Estle, W. F. Lutz,. N. Schmitt and James Lukavsky.
