Description	:	August H. Gus Niewohner, 101, of Waverly, died early Monday evening, April 1, 1996, at the Bartels Lutheran home of natural causes. He was born on May 1, 1894 on a farm five miles east of Fredericksburg, Iowa, the son of Frederick Johann and Louise Nieman Niewohner. Gus Niewohner, 101, of Waverly, died early Monday evening, April 1, 1996, at the Bartels Lutheran home of natural causes. He was born on May 1, 1894 on a farm five miles east of Fredericksburg, Iowa, the son of Frederick Johann and Louise Nieman Niewohner. He attended school near his home, and following his education, helped his family on the farm. On May 27, 1918, he entered the U. S. Army during World War I and served in France. Following his discharged on June 11, 1919, he returned to the family farm near Fredericksburg until October 1920, when he moved to Waverly and purchased a local hardware store, changing the name to Niewohner hardware. On Dec. 6, 1922 he was united marriage to Esther M. Huck and they raise their family in Waverly. In the early 1960s, Gus retired. The couple then spent the next years actively in the community. They spent their winter months in Arizona. Esther died on Sept. 16, 1972, and for a number of years Gus continue to winter in Arizona. In January of 1991, he became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran home. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, where he served on the church council. He served for six years of the Waverly school board, and was a member of the Past Commander of the American Legion Post No. 176. Gus was one of the founders of the Waverly golf Course and Country Club, had served as president, and golfed well into his 90s. He had served as Waverly chamber of commerce presidents and had served on the Board of Directors of Iowa Hardware Insurance Company and later Iowa Kemper Insurance Company. In 1980, he received the chamber of commerce citizen award, in 1993 received the commendation from the French government for his services in France, and has been honored in being the last American Legion Post No. 176 World War I veteran. Throughout his life, Gus had been very involved in this community of Waverly, always concerned about the quality of life for both its presidents and businesses. He is survived by four children and their spouses; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and by one sister, Hertha Morf of Cedar Falls, Iowa. He is preceded death by his parents, his wife, Esther, one son in infancy, six brothers, four sisters, one son-in-law, Dale Coonradt, and by one grandson, David Richmann. Funeral services were held Friday, April 10, 1996 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Waverly, Iowa; Pastor Dennis H. Dickman and Keith Tomlinson officiated. Music was provided that organist, Patricia Hagan and military rights by the American Legion Post No. 176. Burial was in the Harlington cemetery at Waverly, Iowa. - contributor Kris -
