Summit Ave. in Nora Springs and formerly of 608 First Ave. N.W. Rockford, died Monday afternoon (June 7, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W. in Rockford, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Interment and military graveside services will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Dougherty, with a luncheon following the burial at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dougherty. The family will greet friends and relatives from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, with a 10:30 a.m. rosary prior to the service at the church. Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the August "Stan" Carter Memorial Fund in care of Dolores M. Marzen, 1251 290th St., Marble Rock, IA 50563. August Stanley Carter was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Williamsburg, Ky. to Matt and Nannie (Caddell) Carter. He was the ninth of 11 children born to his parents. "Stan," as he was fondly known by his family and friends, was inducted into the United States Army on Oct. 1, 1943, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and served his country during World War II and the Korean War, achieving the rank of sergeant. After honorably and faithfully serving during both wars. Stan was formally discharged from his military duties on April 7, 1954, from Ft. Sheridan, Ill. Stan met his future wife, Dorothy Weston, in Winterhaven, Calif., while Stan was in the service and the couple was married on June 16, 1952 in Yuma, Ariz. Together, they enjoyed dancing to all types of music, playing games of chance at a variety of casinos, and vegetable gardening. Stan and Dorothy were particularly fond of the song, "The Blue Skirt Waltz." Stan and Dorothy moved to Iowa to be near their daughter, Dolores, and became the owners and operators of Carter's Cafe in Dougherty. Stan's most recent employment was the Fiber Co. in Clear Lake. Stan was a member of Holy Family Church, where he was proud to serve as an usher. He also held memberships at the Greene V.F.W. and American Legion. Stan will be remembered by many in Rockford as "the Turtle Man." He had a passion for fishing and capturing turtles from the Shell Rock River and preparing turtle feeds for his family and friends. Some of Stan's favorite leisure activities and interests included cooking a wide variety of foods and baking pies, especially pumpkin pies, his championships with small animals, most notably his pet dog, Jose, and collecting animated and talking toys (such as talking fish). He was a faithful husband and very kind-hearted man with a witty personality. Stan treasured spending time with his wife and his entire family and was devoted to his faith and church. Stan will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Dorothy Carter of Nora Springs; his step-daughter, Dolores (Gerald) Marzen of Marble Rock; his two sisters, Ora Clawson of Ohio and Ruth (Frank) Siler of Florida; his sister-in-law, Pearl Stevens of Winterhaven, Calif.; his six grandchildren, Dennis (Sally) Marzen, Vicki LaBianca, Michael (June) Marzen, Anthony (Char) Marzen, Michelle Deverell and Scott (Stacy) Marzen. He will also be sadly missed by his 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Stan was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
