Augusta Strauss and August Hollatz probably knew each other while growing up in Pamerania. Augusta was born in GrossBorn, a village where August once lived. They were the same age and perhaps they were even in the same confirmation class. Augusta emigrated to the United States in 1881 or 1882 and settled at Joliet, the same time August settled in Joliet. On April 12, 1884 the rest of August's family arrived in the United States and came to Joliet, probably on the 14th. On the next day, April 15, 1884, Augusta Strauss and August Hollatz were married at Joliet, Illinois by Rev. August Schuessler, paster of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. They were both 22 years old. Four children were born while the Hollatzes lived in Joliet - Wilhelm, Carl, Heinrich and Edward. Wilhelm died at Joliet, either as a baby or as a young child, no date is available. In 1892, Augusta and August, their three children (ages 2-4-6) moved to a farm north of Garner, Iowa (Hancock County, Concord Township). In July of the same year, twin boys were born, named Otto and Oskar. About 3 1/2 months later, on Oct 23, Oskar died. The Hollatzes seventh child and only daughter, Elsa was born two years later. The Hollatzes were members of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner. Each of their children were confirmed at age of 13 or 14. After 29 years of farming, August and Augusta retired in 1921 and moved to Ventura, Iowa. On May 21, 1941 Augusta died at home after being in poor health her last years. After funeral services at St. John's Lutheran Church, burial was at St. John's cemtery, rural Garner. Information provided by Alvina Marie (Bohn) Hollatz, wife of Otto Walter Hollatz.
