Cotton passed away suddenly last Friday noon. About a year ago he walked downtown one day, suddenly it turned cold and he hurried back home. However before reaching home the wind came up and it was quite an effort to face the breeze. A few days after this his heart began to fail. Last November he took to his bed and since then he has slowly failed and faded away. Friday morning he awoke feeling about as usual and about 11:30 asked for his paper and glasses which were given him, a few minutes later his wife and son who had just stepped into the next room heard him making an unnatural sound, and rushed to his bed side, reaching him just as he breathed his last. With him when he died were his wife, his daughter Elsie, and son Clyde. He had folded his paper and his glasses were in his hand. Heart trouble were the cause of his death. He had frequently told members of his family that he would live but a short time, but if the Lord so willed he was ready to go. Mr. Cotton was born November 29th, 1853 in Magnolia, Rock county, Wisconsin. While still a young man he came west to Luverne, Minnesota, and took up a claim on the soldier's right of his father. He returned to Wisconsin and in 1875 married Julia A Cain. They came to Dakota in 1878 and settled in Preston township, Brookings county. Here they lived on a farm for 31 years and from there came to Estelline in 1913 where they have made their home since. Mr. Cotton leaves a mother, a wife, five sons and one daughter, three brothers and eight grand children. Mrs. Dyball his mother who is 81 years of age, is at present making her home with Herbert Goodfellow in Preston township. The children are as follows: Owen, living in Montana; Lynn, of Preston; Earl of Hitchcock; Ray of Montana; Clyde and Elsie of Estelline. An other younger son who died in infancy. All children were born in South Dakota except Owen, the eldest who was born in Wisconsin. Eugene Cotton residing in Preston township is his only brother and Clair Dyball of Volga, and Gary Dyball of Estelline, are half brothers. Mr. Cotton was a good upright man honored and respected among his fellows. His habits were clean and he always stood for the very best in the community. He joined the Advent church while at Preston and remained a member of that church to the end. He will be sorely missed by the members of his own family and by all who had learned to know him. His children are fine upright children worthy of our admiration. We all sympathize with them in the loss of their father, too, our sympathy goes out to the widow and mother and three brothers. He was a good clean wholesome life such as the world is sorely in need of, Estelline has lost one of her very best citizens.
