He was married to Harriet Woodard, June 16th, 1842. Moved to Wyoming township, Jones county, Iowa in 1868, where he lived until his death, April 18th, 1899, after an illness of several weeks. There were born to them twelve children, of whom eight are living, four of these being present at the funeral services. Mr. Tompkins enlisted in Co. A 97th Infantry of New York Volunteers, September 30th, 1861. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, his death being caused by this wound. He was discharged from the army July 18th, 1865. He was a quiet, home man, living on a small farm east of town. He has never been strong since moving to this state, but has had some children with or near him all these years, and his departure mourned by family and neighbors who had the pleasure of his acquaintance."
