Aulden Duane Finch was born in Fayette, Iowa, on March 13, 1889, the son of James D. and Minnie (Smith) Finch. His mother died in 1894 and his father in 1913. The family moved to West Union in 1897, and Mr. Finch attended public schools here, graduating from West Union High School in 1907. He then entered Iowa State University at Ames, where he majored in civil engineering. He became Fayette County Bridge Engineer in 1912 and County Engineer in 1919, a post from which he retired in 1963. In 1914 he married Xanta Talcott of Wadena, Iowa, who survives him. He is also survived by a son, Bradford D. of Minneapolis; a daughter, Betty (Mrs. Robert Adams), of Seattle, Washington; by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, by his brother, Ronald M., of Lake Worth, Fla., and by his sister, Gertrude, Winona, Minn. A brother, Rodney, his stepmother, and his sister, Marjorie, preceded him in death. Mr. Finch was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Ames, a thirty-second degree Mason in the West Union Lodge No. 69, served on the West Union City Council; served for several terms on the West Union School Board, and served on the Iowa Highway Research Board. Other affiliations included membership in the National Association of Engineers and the Fayette County Conservation Board, for which he served as Chairman from 1960 to 1967. It was as County engineer that he developed and supervised the building and maintenance of five county parks and recreations grounds, which are Downing, Dutton’s Cave, Goeken, Gouldsburg and Twin Bridges. In 1965 Mr. Finch received a citation plaque from the State Highway Commission, honoring him for 50 years of meritorious service to Iowa highways. He retired as County Engineer in 1963 and from active highway engineering in 1964, and has spent the last few years in travel and in following his favorite recreation of fishing in Canada and the northern lakes.
