Description	:	Austin "Gene" Byars, 86, went to be with his sweetheart, Elaine, on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2012. Gene was born on Aug. 27, 1925, to John and Opal Kolb. He married Elaine Fischer on March 18, 1950, in Tacoma, Wash. They had two sons, Larry Eugene and Kenneth Lee. Gene served in the military for 20 years. During his time of service, he was a wounded P.O.W. in the Korean conflict, awarded the Purple Heart in World War II, and went on to retire in the medical field. After retiring from the military, he worked at the Postal... Read More	Austin "Gene" Byars, 86, went to be with his sweetheart, Elaine, on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 2012. Gene was born on Aug. 27, 1925, to John and Opal Kolb. He married Elaine Fischer on March 18, 1950, in Tacoma, Wash. They had two sons, Larry Eugene and Kenneth Lee. Gene served in the military for 20 years. During his time of service, he was a wounded P.O.W. in the Korean conflict, awarded the Purple Heart in World War II, and went on to retire in the medical field. After retiring from the military, he worked at the Postal Service for 14 years. Upon retiring from the Postal Service he and Elaine spent their winters in Yuma, Ariz. He was a member of the Masonic Temple, a Shriner clown and also a member of the Elks Club. He was the most loving, kind and giving person who would drop anything he was doing to help someone in need, never thinking to call in a favor. His pride in life was doting upon the love of his life, Elaine and his beloved sons and grandchildren. In the front row of every school play, or sporting event, Grandpa was there to cheer on and support! Gene is survived by his sons Larry (Cindy) Byars of Billings, Ken Byars of Oregon; granddaughters Stephanie and Lindsey Byars (Billings) and Rachael Byars; and two great-grandchildren. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life and wife, Elaine; his two brothers, C.C. and Bill; and his grandson, Ben Byars. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cremation and Funeral Gallery. At his request, no services will be held. "Grandpa, I want to thank you for a lifetime of support. Your belief and encouragement in me saw me through college. I will miss your wisdom, stories on life and your hugs."
