Description	:	Austin F. Heuschkel, longtime resident and grandson of one of the area's founding settlers, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at his home on the Crystal River. He was 84. Austin was born June 8, 1920, to Thomas Henry and Beryl Vernice (Smith) Heuschkel on upper Cattle Creek, in the log house built by Austin's grandfather, Frank Heuschkel. Heuschkel, longtime resident and grandson of one of the area's founding settlers, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at his home on the Crystal River. He was 84. Austin was born June 8, 1920, to Thomas Henry and Beryl Vernice (Smith) Heuschkel on upper Cattle Creek, in the log house built by Austin's grandfather, Frank Heuschkel. He grew up on a Cottonwood Pass homestead until he was 10 years old, then spent the rest of his youth on a ranch in lower Cattle Creek. He attended school in the Little Red Schoolhouse and graduated from Garfield County High School in Glenwood Springs in 1939. He graduated at the top of his class. After graduation, Austin bought a ranch on the upper reaches of Cattle Creek, and later that year, his first son was born. During the years he worked the ranch with his family, he joined the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and Eastern Star, forming long-lasting friends. Austin and Doris also started a pinochle club. He worked on the Basalt Water Conservatory District and was active in the Farm Bureau. Austin married Doris B. Gates. They had five children: Austin Lloyd, James Marvin, Sandra Jean, Robert D. and Joyce Ann. Austin and Doris formed a pinochle club, which they enjoyed for many years. He was a member of the Carbondale Community United Methodist Church. He retired from ranching and developed the H Lazy F mobile home park in the late 1970s. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling and visited Alaska and other regions of the United States, Europe, Africa and Australia. Austin lost his first wife in 1985 and later married Ethel Waters Miller Heuschkel. After selling the ranch, Austin built a home on the Crystal River, where he spent the rest of his life. Survivors include sons Austin Lloyd (Bobbie) Heuschkel, of San Jose, Calif., James Heuschkel, of Raton, N.M., Robert D. (Maria) Heuschkel, of Glenwood Springs; daughters Sandra J. (Morris) Evans, of Denver, and Joyce A. Heuschkel, of Carbondale; brother Donald Heuschkel, of Arvada; sisters Margaret Sholes, of Grand Junction, and Ernestine Lewis, of Arvada; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother T. Vern Heuschkel, of Grand Junction.
