Austin Fisher, one of the earliest settlers of Ida County and one of Ida Grove's oldest, best known, and most respected citizens, died a his home on Moorehead Ave. Oct. 17, 1906. He was born near Perry, New York, Dec. 21, 1826. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa. In December 1857, he married Mrs. Eleanor H. Powell (born Feb. 4, 1830) in Cold Creek, Allegheny County, Pa., and that fall moved to Grant County, Wisconsin. It was in the spring of 1872 that they came to Ida County locating on a farm near Battle Creek, Iowa, but later moving to Ida Grove which was their home for 27 years. Mr. Fisher was a Civil War Veteran, and a member of Co. K, 12 Wisconsin Volunteers. He enlisted Dec. 17, 1861, and mustered out July 16, 1865. He was with Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He was a member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). In the early days, Mr. Fisher rode the Pony Express that carried the through mail and express from Denison to Cushing, Iowa, and that was his part of the through ride from Des Moines to Sioux City, Iowa. He told many a romantic and interesting story of the old days when he rode the old white horse from Denison to Ida Grove through snowy drifts ten feet deep and with many thousands of dollars in money in his charge when there were not a half dozen houses between here and Denison, Iowa. This service was discontinued in 1877 when the railroad was completed through Battle Creek. Funeral services were held from the home, Rev Chandler conducting the service. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; Austin Fisher, Jr.; and two step daughters, Mrs. L. Hitchcock and Mrs. Hattie Campbell. --------
