Description	:	Austin Jacobs was born on October 21, 1803 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. When he was 17, the extended Jacobs family moved to Indiana, initially to Washington County and then later Johnson County. These moves are presumed to be in pursuit of land earned through Bounty Land Warrants for his father's and grandfather's service in the War of 1812. When he was 17, the extended Jacobs family moved to Indiana, initially to Washington County and then later Johnson County. These moves are presumed to be in pursuit of land earned through Bounty Land Warrants for his father's and grandfather's service in the War of 1812. In 1825 when Austin was 21, he married Susannah Bosworth who was 13 years old at the time of their marriage. Together they had seven children, although only five survived past infancy. Susannah died in 1839 at the age of 28. In 1841, Austin married Hannah Hamilton Walker. As a second marriage for Hannah as well, she had four sons with her first husband James Walker before his death in 1839 at the age of 31. When they married, Hannah and Austin brought their combined 9 children together (ages 4 to 16). And they subsequently went on the have eight children together before Hannah's death on January 13, 1855. It is speculated that Hannah died during the birth of Anson Walker Jacobs, who would carry until his death in 1936, what is believed to be an erroneous birthday of January 13, 1856. It is also believed that Austin gave Anson the middle name of "Walker" as symbolic in bonding him to his four half-brothers who carried the Walker last name. Austin Jacobs served as both the Johnson County Sheriff and County Treasurer from 1842 to 1844, and was a County Commissioner for the second district from 1846 to 1848 ("A Historical Sketch of Johnson County Indiana" 1881, p.105-106). In 1850, Austin and the extended Jacobs families moved another 500 miles west to Keokuk County, Iowa where they acquired modest landholdings. Following the move to Iowa, Austin purchased and operated a grist mill ("Jacobs Mill") in Lancaster Township, and served on the County Board of Supervisors for Keokuk County. In early January 1861 "Mr. Austin Jacobs… was fatally bruised… by being caught in the machinery of his mill" ("The Morning Democrat", Davenport, Iowa, January 12, 1861, page 2). Although he lost his lower left leg in the accident, Austin survived and lived nearly 13 additional productive years. Austin died on December 21, 1873 at the age of 70. He and his wife Hannah are buried in Pennington Cemetery, Sigourney, Keokuk County Iowa.
