He had resided in Anthon 23 years and in Woodbury County since 1890, with the exception of one year spent in Colorado. Deceased was born in DeKalb Co., Illinois, March 30, 1850, the youngest son of William and Mary Martin. His father ran a ferryboat on the Mississippi River, the family living on Geneva Island, an island in the river. When Austin was only four years old his father died. About two years later the mother and her nine children moved to Helena, Tama Co., Iowa, and it was there that Austin started to school and grew to manhood. Upon finishing his rural school course Austin went to Grinnell College and fitted himself for teaching. He taught school during the winter and farmed in the summer until in 1873 when he devoted his entire time to farming. On February 17, 1872, he was married at Toledo, Iowa, to Miss Farsina R. Riddle. The Martin family resided in the vicinity of Helena until 1883, when they moved to a farm in Ida County near Battle Creek, residing there seven years. In 1890 the Martins purchased a farm in Woodbury County eight miles northwest of Battle Creek, making their home there until 1909 when Mr. Martin retired from active farming and one of his sons, Grover, took over the place. Miss Velma, one of their children, being in poor health, the Martins then spent a year at Loveland, Colorado, returning to Woodbury County in 1910 to take up their residence. They have lived here since. Nineteen months ago Mr. Martin suffered a stroke from which he never completely recovered. Dropsy and heart trouble complications developed, and he gradually became weaker. He refused to become bedfast until Sunday, May 7, when his condition became critical. The end came peacefully at 2 a.m. Friday. Those left to mourn Mr. Martin's demise are his widow, Farsina Martin; three sons, Virgil of Mapleton, Elmer and Grover of Battle Creek; and two daughters, Mrs. Ada Davis of Mapleton and Miss Velma of Anthon. A son, Orlando, passed away in 1924. There also are 31 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren surviving. Mr. Martin was the last of the family of nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Anthon M.E. Church were largely attended by relatives and friends, attesting to the high esteem in which he was held. The church was crowded with those who came to pay their last respects to Mr. Martin. Rev. Watson Herrold officiated, and pallbearers were six grandsons, Keith, Elmer, Alwyn and Donald Martin, Clifford and Darrell Davis. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Hudgel's Funeral Service had charge of the arrangements. -------------------------
