He was born March 28, 1915, at his family home in Wever, the son of John Gottfried "Fred" and Josephine Veronica Wenke Schroeder. He married Virginia Coens, Sept. 1, 1956, at Quincy, Ill. She preceded him in death Feb. 22, 1991. He was a family farmer all his life and a commercial fisherman. He was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Church, Fort Madison. He was also an avid naturalist, loved to hunt and fish and loved to tell stories of his hunting experiences. His loving survivors include, one daughter, Ginger (husband Jeff) Wilkens, Fort Madison; one son, Austin J. "Herky" Schroeder, Fort Madison; two grandchildren, Reyna Wilkens and Lane Wilkens, both of Fort Madison; and one sister, Marie Schroeder Dittmer, Wever. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Herman Schroeder. The Mass of the Resurrection will be concelebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 28, at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church, Fort Madison, with Rev. Thomas L. Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fort Madison. The family will meet with friends immediately following the Mass and burial service at Ss. Mary and Joseph Parish Center. His body has been cremated. A memorial has been established for Ss. Mary and Joseph Church and contributions may be left at the church. King-Lynk Funeral Home, Fort Madison, is in charge of arrangements.
