C, 58th MA Infantry (Sep 1864 to Jun 1865) The son of Eliab and Elizabeth (Tilson) Ward, Austin was married to Ann Janette Sherman ca. 1854 and they were the parents of Frederick Austin, born 1855; Emma Jeanette, born 1856; and Bessie, born 1864. He was a 35-year-old Butcher from Carver, MA, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on August 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on August 24, 1861. Per records he was 5 ft. 6-1/2 in. tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark brown hair. Austin was recorded as "Present" on regimental muster rolls from August 1861 through November and December 1861 when he was detailed as a Butcher in the Brigade Commissary department. The July and August 1862 Muster Roll indicates he was hospitalized at Newport News, VA until his discharge from the Convalescence Camp at Alexandria, VA on Nov. 12, 1862 due to chronic diarrhea and heart disease. Austin, apparently having improved health, enlisted for a second time and was mustered as a Private in Co. C of the 58th Massachusetts Infantry. This regiment, which left the Bay State on April 30th, was quickly thrust into battle at the Wilderness on May 5th and were engaged in fierce fighting until the middle of June, during which time 51 were killed and 230 wounded. At the battle of the Crater on June 15th 84 of their number were taken prisoner. 99 more were captured by Confederates at Poplar Grove Church on Sep. 30th. Bloodied but not bowed, the 58th remained in the Petersburg trenches until the spring of 1865 when they helped pursue Lee’s retreating Army of Northern, VA. They were at Burkeville, about 40 miles east of Appomattox, when news of the surrender reached them. Austin resided at Carver following his discharge, where he worked as a Huckster and Shoemaker. Austin died of Tuberculosis at Carver on September 15, 1878 and was interred at Lakenham Cemetery, Section E Row 1. His wife Angenette remarried to Andrew D. Merritt at Carver on Dec. 2, 1883. She died in Middleboro on Feb 16, 1899 and was interred in the same lot as Austin at the Lakenham Cemetey The following research was completed by Find a Grave member Sandra Lennox: Austin was the son of Eliab Ward & Elizabeth Tillson.
