Description	:	Ava Jane Carter was born on February 20, 1920 in Scranton, ND to J. B. and Margaret (Brown) Carter. Her grade school and high school years were spent in Scranton. She was active in school activities, was a first string guard for the girl's basketball team and held lead roles in school musicals. Even then, Ava had a flair for fashion and enjoyed dressing in stylish outfits. After graduation, she attended nursing school in Miles City, MT. On August 20, 1939, she married Wilfred Lindquist. Her grade school and high school years were spent in Scranton. She was active in school activities, was a first string guard for the girl's basketball team and held lead roles in school musicals. Even then, Ava had a flair for fashion and enjoyed dressing in stylish outfits. After graduation, she attended nursing school in Miles City, MT. On August 20, 1939, she married Wilfred Lindquist. They moved to Hettinger. To this union, six children were born. Ava was the bookkeeper for the area theaters and assisted in the dry-cleaning business. Ava was active in the community as a member of Eastern Star, Church Circle and Business Professional Women. She was a member of the Hettinger Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Ava was later employed by J.C. Penney's, Snyder's Bakery and First National Bank Insurance Agency. She was an asset to all of her employers; as she was dependable, hardworking and exuded a pleasing personality that was a magnet for all that came to know her! She was a loving mother and derived great satisfaction in knowing that all of her children were well educated. In 1973, she married Gordon Hersrud, during which time, she moved to Lemmon, SD to start a new chapter in her life. Ava and Gordon had many friends, were active in the Calvary Lutheran Church and in the Lemmon community. They loved to travel, play golf and took in many Viking's games and spent their winters in Palm Springs, CA. Ava will be remembered for her culinary talents. She took great pleasure in trying new recipes, loved pickling and preparing wonderful meals for friends and family. Through the years, many have asked for her advice on cooking. Ava was known for her beauty, style, wit and graciousness. She set high standards for herself and her family and had a deep abiding faith in her Lord. She was a compassionate human being and will be deeply missed by many. Ava Jane Hersrud, matriarch of the Lindquist family, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on April 6, 2007 at the Southwest Medical Center Long Term Care Unit in Bowman, ND. Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband, Gordon, her children, J.B. (Carol) Lindquist, of Hettinger, Margaret Jane (Jerry) Pederson, of Park Rapids, MN, Susan Ava (Clarence) Archibald, Carter (Sue) Lindquist, Charles (Diana) Lindquist and Christopher (Terri) Lindquist, all of Hettinger, ND, step children, Carol (Clark) Johnson, of Lemmon, SD and Martin (Helen) Hersrud, of Olympia, WA, 24 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Laura Carter, of Camp Verde, AZ, Dixie Carter, of Pensacola, FL and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Ava in death were her parents, an infant grandson and two brothers, Bill and Dick Carter. Service of Remembrance for Ava Jane Hersrud, 87, of Lemmon, SD will be Friday, April 27, 2007 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Rev. Ken Miller will officiate and burial will follow at the Scranton Cemetery in Scranton, ND. Arrangements by Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
