She died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek. ——— Avalon was born on June 14, 1930, in Norfolk, the daughter of Casper and Vada (Peterson) Rasmusson. She was raised in Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk High School in 1947. She was employed at the Employment Office in Norfolk. On Aug. 31, 1952, Avalon married Lawrence Unkel in Norfolk. The couple moved to Lawrence’s family farm southwest of Battle Creek. Avalon was active at St. John’s Lutheran Church as a member of the ladies aid and serving funeral dinners. She also volunteered at Orphan Grain Train and was a reading grandmother at St. John’s Elementary School. She worked for many years at Two Town Vet Clinic in Battle Creek. She enjoyed her flower garden and living on the farm. Avalon is survived by her spouse, Lawrence; their children, Laurie Mueller of Omaha, Craig (Jean) Unkel of Battle Creek and Brian (Carol) Unkel of Battle Creek; her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Doralea Lee of Norfolk, Marie O’Conner of Lincoln and Jeanice Nelson of Albion. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
