She was born on January 10, 1920, near Watson, MO, to Ernest and Gertrude (Hamilton) Fike. Avis had three sisters, Sylvia, Inez and Mary, and one brother, Earl. Her family moved to Palisades in 1930. Cockrum, 88, a longtime resident of Wenatchee, died at home in Cashmere on Thanksgiving Day 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 10, 1920, near Watson, MO, to Ernest and Gertrude (Hamilton) Fike. Avis had three sisters, Sylvia, Inez and Mary, and one brother, Earl. Her family moved to Palisades in 1930. She graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1938. She graduated from Success Business University in Seattle in 1940. She was a legal secretary for many years. She married Quintin Cory on September 20, 1941; he died in Burma on November 14, 1943, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. She married Leslie J. Cockrum on October 26, 1947, at First Methodist Church, Wenatchee; they had two children, Dale, born in 1953, and Brian, born in 1960. Leslie preceded her in death in 1976. Avis lived in a house on North Rogers Drive in Wenatchee for 52 years. She had a small orchard with many kinds of trees and a large garden. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, gardening, travel and crafts (especially crocheting). She had a passion for writing fiction and researching genealogy. She traced her lineage back to the Revolutionary War heroes and Romanian royalty. She was a member of the John Kendrick chapter of DAR, the NCW Genealogical Society, First United Methodist Church and the Delta Rho Chapter of the Alpha Iota Sorority. She faced many health challenges, but discovered swimming as a way of overcoming them. Over more than 20 years, she swam hundreds of miles, earning special recognition. For the last several years, Avis lived in Cashmere, next door to her son, Brian, and his family. She was cared for lovingly by her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She was especially proud of her pond and rose garden. A special thanks to Frank, Sheena and Willie for helping take such wonderful care of mother. We will miss you very much. She is survived by her son, Dale (and JoAnna) Cockrum of Spokane; her son, Brian (and Tammi) Cockrum of Cashmere; grandchildren, Tyson (and Sheena), Galen (and Shaylee) and Ashlyn of Cashmere; and by one great-grandson, Jaden of Cashmere. She is also survived by two sisters, Sylvia Hyndman and Mary Johnson, both of Brewster. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Quinton; second husband, Leslie; sister, Inez; brother, Earl; and granddaughter, Leslie Love Cockrum. Services of Commemoration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2008, at Wenatchee Untied Methodist Church. Services are by Jones & Jones ~ Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee.
