Read More	WATFORD CITY - Avis (Engebretson) Rogness, 91, of Watford City, N.D. died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Nursing Home in Watford City. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2008, at the First Lutheran Church in Watford City. Rev. Chris Montgomery and Pastoral Assistant Rob Favorite will officiate and interment will follow at the Schafer Cemetery. There will be a family service open to the public at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home. Avis Rosella Engebretson was born in a tiny tarpaper homestead shack on July 24, 1916, to Samuel and Louise (Hansen) Engebretson of rural Watford City, N.D. After hearing about their living conditions, Louise's brother Henry who lived back home in Minnesota sent his sister $1,000 to build their new family home. Avis walked with neighbor kids to the Hively Country School and later attended Watford City High School, graduating in 1933. She went on to Dickinson State Normal College and received her Standard Teaching Certificate at age 17. She taught in several county rural schools including: Norstog School, Hively School, Cherry School, Johnson Corners School, and ended her career as a long-time second grade teacher at Watford City Public School. She retired after 25 years of teaching but continued to be a substitute teacher for many years. As a young girl Avis enjoyed helping her father with the farm work by driving the horses and mowing and raking hay. She also helped with the animals and learned to drive their Ford car when she was nine years old. Avis admired the work ethics and educational values of her mother and appreciated that her mother insisted that her three children attend institutions of higher education. On Oct. 5, 1940, Avis R. Engebretson and Harold J. Rogness eloped. They were married at Bowdon, N.D. at the home of their former pastor, Reverend Eidbo. The couple always lived in the Watford City area. They purchased the family farm in 1956, which was 4 miles south and 1/2 mile west of town. They enjoyed a large vegetable garden that also included strawberries and raspberries and, of course, rhubarb. In 1998 they sold their farm and bought a small house in Watford City near the school where Avis taught and which all her children attended. Harold passed away Nov. 25, 2004. Avis was a member of First Lutheran Church. The family attended the Spring Creek Lutheran Church for many years while their children were at home. Avis is survived by her daughters, Vicky (Glenn) Stenehjem of Watford City, N.D., and Ardis Burkholder of Gresham, Neb.; son, Hardy Joel Rogness of Bismarck, N.D.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; sister, Carol; and brother, Orville.
