Crowell, a son of Captain Prince Sears Crowell and Polly Dillingham Crowell, was born at East Dennis, June 21, 1846, and passed out of this life from his Home in Woods Hole, Saturday, June 8, at one o'clock. For almost fifty-four years he was a resident of the town. For a number of years he was chemist at the Guano factory. For a time he engaged in the fish business with Capt. Isaiah Spindell; and for a few years was treasurer of the Mitchell Fish Co. of East Boston. The highest interests of the town were his interests. He will be remembered as a prominent figure in the town meetings. His voice was always heard in the interest of what was best for the town. He was largely instrumental in obtaining the first superintendent of Falmouth schools, and was a member of the building committees of both the Woods Hole Grammar school and the Lawrence High school. He was a shareholder in the old library at Woods Hole and was secretary of the new Library Association. Not only was he fond of good books, but was an earnest student of chemistry, and continued to work in his laboratory until a few weeks before he died. He did not fail to keep step with the progress of the times. The good old days of the past were to him but a part of the procession that is moving onward toward that "Far off divine event, toward which the whole creation tends." He saw that we are standing upon the threshold of a new world and that the present struggle is the demon tearing the old world as it passes out. It was not his privilege to have a part in that larger world that is soon to be, but from more lofty heights he will witness the victory and rejoice with us in our new life and happiness. The best thing about him was his character and disposition. He believed in God and in the religion which God and Jesus Christ gave to the world. His life was marked by that measure of control which does not come to every man. Those who know him best, testify that they never heard him speak a cross, word. No wife ever had a better husband nor children a better father than was he. All that is left of his life is the memory which is very precious, and the anticipation of meeting again, which is God's great gift to sorrowing folk. He is survived by the widow, nine children and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, June 11, at 2.00 o'clock, conducted by Dr. D.W. Clark, assisted by Dr. Fisher. Interment was in the cemetery at Woods Hole.
