Mr. Campbell was a little better off than most of his mountain neighbors and was able to hire help to work on his farm. His wife, Judith hired a young girl named Mary Snead to help in the house. On December 20, 1849, when Mary Snead was only sixteen years old and unmarried she gave birth to a son in the Campbell home and named him Walter Downey Snead. John Fitzgerald, twenty-eight years old, claimed the child as his and contributed to his upbringing, but for some reason John and Mary did not marry. Family lore states that Mary's mother read a psalm out of the Bible as a curse on "Big" John for not marrying her daughter after he ruined her. In later years this curse appeared to come true because all of "Big" John's legitimate children either died young and tragically or suffered physical afflictions. (However, Walter died young also.) Walter Downy Snead lived with James and Judith Campbell until he was about eleven years old. At some point his mother, Mary Snead, married Matt Ramsey and moved in the Buena Vista, Virginia, area. Around 1861, Walter moved into his father, "Big" John's home. They all got along well together, playing music and creating mountain legends. "Big" John was able to read and saw to it that his sons, including Walter, got enough primary education to take care of their own affairs. Walter's descendant's say he wrote his own deeds, contracts, and occasionally a legal warning. Walter Snead played the banjo and his half-brother, Landon Fitzgerald played the fiddle, and they were popular at family and com munity functions. Walter married Azella Marie Campbell (1854 1935) in 1872; she was the daughter of Edmund S. Campbell and Isabella Phillips. Azella was a young girl during the Civil War, and she told many stories of the hardships to her children and grand children. She remembered pulling up floorboards in the meathouse to get to the dirt underneath and boiling this dirt to extract the salt that had fallen through the floor from years of salting meat for preservation. She remembered going to the fields where thorn bushes grew and looking for the best thorns to use for needles and pins for sewing and mending purposes. Walter and Azella raised the following children on Fork Mountain at Montebello: Thomas Marshall, Walter D. Jr., William Henry, James Crist, Thuel Homer, Minnie Evelyn, and Nellie Mae. Walter died at the age of fifty-one in 1900, he is buried in the Snead Family Cemetery on Fork Mountain. Azella lived for thirty-five more years staying on the mountain for the most part, but visiting on occasion some of her children who had moved to Covington, Virginia. All of her children except James Crist moved to Covington. James Crist Snead stayed in the Montebello area and raised his family.
