Description	:	Azil Therman "Lefty" Wallen, 86, of Ripley went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his home, surrounded by family. He was born Sept. 13, , in Boone County and was a son of the late Charles and Garnett Ellis Wallen. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ailene Craddock; and his stepfather, Albert Elkins. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. H worked as a coal miner before he was employed by Kaiser Aluminum, where he retired. He was born Sept. 13, , in Boone County and was a son of the late Charles and Garnett Ellis Wallen. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ailene Craddock; and his stepfather, Albert Elkins. He was an Army veteran of World War II, where he was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. H worked as a coal miner before he was employed by Kaiser Aluminum, where he retired. He was a well known softball player for several years, having played in many local and state tournaments. He was a member of the Ripley Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed gospel music. He was a 35-year member of the Glad Hearts gospel group. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dellie Lester Wallen; sons and their wives, Dennis and Rose Wallen of Ripley and Dallas and Carolyn Wallen of Evans; five grandsons and their wives, Richard and Dora Wallen of Virginia Beach, Va., Bryan and Julie Wallen of Greenville, S.C., David and Brooke Wallen of Evans, Matthew and Karee Wallen of Virginia Beach, and Marc Azil and Alicia Wallen of Ripley; brother-in-law, Wilson Craddock of Hewett Creek; nine great-grandchildren; nieces, Catherine Smith and Naomi Craddock; and nephew, Wilson Craddock Jr. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan 24, at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Pastor Jay Vestal and John Gunther officiating. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 107, Ripley, will be in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25312, or the Missionary Society of Ripley Church of the Nazarene, 209 Cedar Lakes Drive, Ripley, WV 25271.
