Roll 8039 1/7/1970-12/29/1970 BALDASAR MATTERN EX-COMMISSIONER DIES MONDAY AT 83. Baldasar Mattern, 83, Strasburg, former Emmons County commissioner and retired farmer, died at his home of 6:30 a.m. Monday, Oct 26, after an illness of two weeks. He served as commission from 1928 to 1932, was a member of the board of directors of the Strasburg Farmers Elevator 30 years, a member of Mattern School District's board of directors four years and a member of the Emmons County Selective Service board two years. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) from SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Roman Schmidt officiating. Arrangements were by the Kraft Funeral Home, Linton, and burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Victor Deringer Strasburg; Harry Magel, Linton; Stanley M. Wald, Kintyre; Adam Reis, Trail City, S.D.; Anton Wald, Zeeland; and Felix Mattern, Billings, Mont. Honorary pallbearers were Peter F Baumgartner, Linton; John Gross, Napoleon; Sebastian Wald, Zeeland, Joe Getz, Valentin Scherr and Fred Mattern, all of Strasburg. Mr. Mattern was born in Russia on Aug. 2, 1887 to Ludwig and Sabina (Thomas) Mattern. In 1899 the family came to this country, and settled on a farm one mile south and a half-mile west of Strasburg where he lived until he married Rosalia Wald at St. John's Catholic Church, Zeeland, Nov. 16, 1909. The couple lived on a farm in the Dale area in southwest Emmons two years, then in 1912 moved to a farm three miles south of Strasburg and lived there until retiring into Strasburg in 1943. Mrs. Mattern preceded her husband in death. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Balsar B.; Anton and Mary, all of Strasburg and Mrs. Pius (Julia) Streifel, Ontario, Calif. There are 18 grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Louis Welk, Aberdeen, S.D., and Agatha Wangler, Browersville, Minn.
