Barbara Alice O'Roake was the daughter of Cecil and Margaret Mozelle Morrison O'Roake. She was raised in Newton and graduate from Newton High School in 1953. Soon after graduating, she attended nursing school in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was married to Dr Pedro Gabriel Hoyos in 1957 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, Iowa. They were the parents of Mark, Sheila, Teresa, Martha, Peter, Mary and Peggy. The couple lived in metropolitan Detroit, Michigan for many years. She returned to Newton in 1987 and later moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell on November 1, 1999. Barb enjoyed raising her 7 children during the prime of her life, she reminisced that it took all her energy to raise them and they kept her very busy. She limited her outside-the-home activities to that of being active in her church. She enjoyed traveling and had visited numerous cities in the Caribbean and Mexico and she also enjoyed visiting her children and grandchildren in their homes. She was an avid reader and the wide variety of titles speaks to her wide interests: biographies, political science and mysteries, but she was particularly interested in the world of poetry and Irish literature. She was very proud of her Irish heritage! She was a passionate fan of the Newton Cardinals and St Louis Cardinals and enjoyed watching sporting events on television.
