She was one of the old residents of this vicinity and a woman whose qualities influenced the community for the best things of life. One daughter, Mrs. J.H. Crew, and four sons, Ed. L., Fred P., G.C. and E.W. Fernow all residing on farms near Marion, survive. A brief service will be held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Crew, at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon and the funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church. Dr. C.F. Ensign, her pastor, will conduct the service. The Marion Sentinel Thursday February 11, 1915 Barbara Ann McArthur was born March 15, 1941, at Greenfield, Ohio, and died near Marion, Iowa, February 4, 1915. She came to this vicinity with her parents at the early age of four years. She has seen it develop from pioneer conditions to the present state of prosperity. She was one of two children, the other, a brother, dying in infancy. When but a child she lost her mother, her death occurring in 1852, and that of her father in 1881. After the death of her mother she spent her girlhood in the home of her uncles. She was converted at the age of fifteen, becoming a member of the Baptist church. After the conversion of her husband in a Methodist revival they united with the church. She united with the Presbyterian church of Marion October 31, 1874, and has been a most faithful and earnest member, always considering it a privilege to attend all the services possible. Nothing but illness prevented her from being in her accustomed place in the house of God on the Sabbath day. The last time she attended church was on Mother's Day, last May. She was united in marriage on October 25, 1859 ti Samuel Fernow, going to the old homestead to reside, which place has been her home almost continually since. After twenty-five years of happy life, her husband was taken Dec. 15, 1884, leaving Mrs. Fernow with six children to care for. All of these grew to manhood and womanhood and survive the mother, with the exception of the fourth child, Lulu Fernow Drew, who preceded her in death five years. The remaining children are: Mary A., wife of John Crew, Edward L., Fred P., Carl L. and E. Wesley, all of Marion. Also there are six grandchildren and one great grandchild. On May 14, 1914, she was taken ill, and through months of suffering was patient and kind, never forgetting amid all her own pain and sorrow of others. Anxious to live if such was best, but willing and glad to go if it was the Lord's will. The evening before her death, her prayer was for her loved ones and the weak members of her church. Her age was 73 years, 10 months and 20 days. The funeral services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Crew and the Presbyterian church, conducted by her pastor, Dr. C.F. Essign. Burial was in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery. The choir, Miss Ethyle Wood, Miss Gladys Stewart, Mr. Clyde Kearns and W.B. Sebern sang beautifully some of the old hymns that she loved to sing at church.
