Her parents were John and Harriett Shafer, pioneers, who early came to this section from Pennsylvania. After spending the early years of her life on her father's farm, she came to East Germantown Indiana, where she worked in homes for a time. It was here that she met and was married to Wesley Gipe. Read More	The Cambridge City Tribune Cambridge City, Indiana Thursday, December 26, 1929 Mrs. Barbara Gipe Barbara Ellen Shafer was born near what is now Arcadia, in Hamilton county, Indiana, March 16, 1844. Her parents were John and Harriett Shafer, pioneers, who early came to this section from Pennsylvania. After spending the early years of her life on her father's farm, she came to East Germantown Indiana, where she worked in homes for a time. It was here that she met and was married to Wesley Gipe. Their marriage occurred November 27, 1862. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive — Mrs. Reuben Bertsch of Cambridge City; William W. of West Alexandria, George F. and Park of Pershing. Eight grandchildren and fourteen Great grandchildren also survive, as do also two brothers, George and John Shafer, both of Arcadia. She was preceded in death by her husband thirty years ago. She maintained her home for some years following the death of her husband but for the last few years has been making her home with her children. A fall several years ago caused a decline in health, until at last she fell peacefully to sleep December 17, 1929, at the ripe age of 85 years, nine months and one day. Mrs. Gipe has been a life long member of the Lutheran church, having been baptised and confirmed in a church near her parental home. She transferred her membership to Zion Lutheran church of Pershing some years ago. Her constant loyalty to the church, her quiet life, among her children, and her uncomplaining endurance of decline speak of Christian virtues and faith which will ever be precious memories to all who knew her.
