Born in Danforth, Maine, on Sept. 16, 1931, the daughter of the late Francisco Penna and Mildred (Patenaude) Hagar. She graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1949. Sylvester, 86, passed away Oct. 7, 2017, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H., following a sudden illness. Born in Danforth, Maine, on Sept. 16, 1931, the daughter of the late Francisco Penna and Mildred (Patenaude) Hagar. She graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1949. For Barbara, taking care of her children, grandchildren and loved ones was what she enjoyed most in life. She loved her family, you could’ve come anytime day or night, she was always glad to see you. She had a heart of gold and was an incredibly giving person. She could always brighten the room wherever she was with her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. She was proud of the life she lived and the family that so often surrounded her. If you knew Barbara you would know, there was nothing in this world that made her happier. In her early years she lived in Fryeburg Harbor, Maine, around 1960 she moved to Conway, N.H., with her four children. She worked at the Yield house in North Conway for a brief period. In 1961, she met her husband Joseph “the newspaper man.” They married and had two more children. Together they built and ran Sylvester’s Mobile Home Park, throughout the years they provided homes for many families. She leaves a brother, Richard Penna and wife, Alicia, of Marlborough, N.H. A sister, Susan (Hagar) and husband, Peter Bolton, of Plymouth, N.H.; her children, JoAnn and husband, James Ham, of Center Ossipee, N.H.; Mary and husband, Joseph Daley, of Windham, Maine, Steven Hall and wife, Joanne, of Albany, N.H.; Wendi and husband, Raymond Shaw, of Conway, N.H.; and Shawn Sylvester and wife, Amy Benner, of Conway, N.H.; two daughters-in-law, Ginny Burnell of Brownfield, Maine; and Christine Allen of California; 20 grandchildren, Jason Smith of Naples, Fla.; Jeremy Smith of Portsmouth, N.H.; Christopher Garcia of South Burlington, Vt.; Tyson Garcia of Naples, Maine; Becky Florance of Overbrook, Kans.; Steven and Matthew Hall of Conway, N.H.; Jonah and Tabyn Hall of California; Shoshanna and Asia Gard of California; Bruce and Stacia Sylvester of Conway; Allison and Morgan Sylvester-Shaw of Conway; Zhawna, Trevor and Ashley Sylvester of Conway; 18 great-grandchilden and one great-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves her best friend of 65 years, Viola Cram of Fryeburg, Maine, and her loving caretakers Jen, Wendy, Colleen, Desirae and Pam. Mrs. Sylvester was predeceased by her loving husband of 29 years Joseph A. Sylvester in 1996; her sons Bruce F. Hall in 1954, William C. Hall in 1990, her step-son Joseph J. Sylvester in 2015, a sister Beverly A. Penna in 1957 and step-father Carl W. Hagar in 2004. Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 13, 6 to 8 p.m. at Furber and White funeral home North Conway. The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at 3 p.m. at Conway Village Congregational Church (The Brown Church). Burial will follow at Austin Bemis Cemetery in Fryeburg Harbor, Maine.
