She was born in Duncan, Nebraska to Bernard and Louise (Marsolek) Sokol. Barbara attended grade school and high school in Duncan, later furthering her education at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, completing the requirements for becoming a Registered Nurse in 1951. Ekeler, formerly of Friend, passed away Friday November 2, 2018 at the Lancaster Manor in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 25 days. She was born in Duncan, Nebraska to Bernard and Louise (Marsolek) Sokol. Barbara attended grade school and high school in Duncan, later furthering her education at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, completing the requirements for becoming a Registered Nurse in 1951. Barbara married Alfred Ekeler on November 3, 1951 in Duncan and to this union four children were born. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Barb was employed at Warren Memorial Hospital, caring for patients for 31 years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Friend, serving her church in many capacities. She also was a member of the St. Elizabeth Alumni Association, and a former member of the Friend Grange. Barb especially loved following the activities of her children and grandchildren and attending their sporting activities. She also enjoyed traveling with family and friends to various places in the United States. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alfred, granddaughter, Ashley Johnson, great-grandson, Aydan Naber, sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Casey Zagozda, brother and sister-in-law, John “Jack” and Angie Sokol.
