She died Sunday, April 12, 2015, at her home in Tilden. ——— Barbara Jean (Fields) Larson was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Meadow Grove to Clyde and Neola (Prevo) Fields. Her first few years were spent in Meadow Grove, where her father worked as a welder for Schinck Implement. The family moved to a farm south of Oakdale in the early 1940s. She attended rural school for eight years. Barbara graduated from Oakdale High School in 1955 and continued her education at Norfolk Junior College and Wayne State College as an education and music major. She married Lamont Larson of Wausa on Aug. 5, 1956, at Peace Evangelical Church in Tilden. They moved to Clay Center, where both taught in the Clay Center school system. Barbara retired in 2003. To this union two daughters were born, LuAnn and Laurie. They also opened their home to a foster son, Rob Hamilton. Both Barbara and Lamont attended summer school at Chadron State College, where she completed hours toward a library endorsement. The couple continued to make their home in Clay Center until 2006, when they moved to Tilden. Barbara served as leader of Brownie Scouts in Clay Center, taught Sunday school, served on various church committees and played the organ and piano for church services. She was a member of the Nebraska Educational Media Association, where she was awarded the Distinction Award for her work with Media Moments. She served as Mother Advisor of Harvard Assembly of International Order of Rainbow for Girls and was honored with the Grand Cross of Colors. She was a member of the Clay Center Lions Club, Tilden-Meadow Grove Lions Club and the Nebraska Lions Foundation. She received several awards of distinction for starting, with her father, the Nebraska Lions Camp for the Visual and Hearing Impaired. Barbara received the Melvin Jones Award for her work as camp director. From 2007 to 2009, Barbara served as assistant speech coach at Lutheran High Northeast, where the team earned a district championship and a fifth-place finish at state. Barbara volunteered at the Raymond A. Whitwer Tilden Public Library for a number of years, was a member of the Tilden Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library. She organized the library’s book club, reading programs and multiple fundraisers. For a number of years, Barb wrote book reviews, which appeared in the local newspaper. She enjoyed reading mysteries and crossword puzzles. Barbara is survived by husband, Lamont, of Tilden; daughters LuAnn (Scott) Schindler of Clearwater and Laurie Larson of Norfolk; granddaughters Cassandra Seagren of Omaha, Amanda (Bryan) Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Courtney Kaiser of Clearwater; great-grandchildren Marvin of Hastings and Jorden and Walker of Clearwater; twin brother Cecil (Lorine) Fields of Leigh; Deanna (Paul) Malzacher of Kearney; Virginia (Dan) Moti of Winona, Minn., and Joyce (Mike) Warneke of Tilden; foster daughter-in-law Tracy Hamilton of Bartlesville, Okla.; stepgrandchildren Tammy Kaiser of Hastings, Kevin (Jessica) Kaiser of Wausa, Chris (Lacie) Kaiser of Hastings, Krystal Schindler of Ord, Melanie Schindler of Lincoln, Tyler Schindler of Lincoln and Lacey Schindler of Laurel; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Donovan and foster son Rob.
