Burial at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Barbara was born October 19, 1930, in Grinnell, the daughter of Jessie (Thorp) Reeves and Ransom Reeves. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1949 graduate of Grinnell High School. On August 6, 1950, she married LaVerne Hanssen in Grinnell. The couple lived in Florida and later Colorado while LaVerne served in the United States Air Force. They returned to Grinnell and farmed with LaVerne’s family near Malcom. In 1959, they opened Hanssen Studio in Grinnell and worked together until they sold the business in 1992 to Cory and Barb Hall. Barbara loved to travel and she visited many countries. She moved to Seeland Park in 2006 and enjoyed the social activities and gatherings. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Barbara and her sister, Marjory volunteered in the church office. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Lynnda (Mark) Risting; grandsons, Christopher (Ashley) Risting and Jonathan (Allie) Risting; sister, Marjory Kaloupek; and great-grandchildren, Aeryn, Zion, Amara, and twins Archie and Nash. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LaVerne in 2006; her sister, Geraldine Johnson; three brothers, Richard “Dick” Reeves, Charles “Chuck” Reeves, and Robert “Bobby” Reeves, in infancy; two brothers-in-law, Robert Kaloupek and Warren Johnson; and one sister-in-law, Sibyl Reeves. Memorial contributions may be designated to St. Francis Manor Foundation or Grinnell United Methodist Church. Source: Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
