She was born May 26, 1927 to James Walter and Elsie (Smith) Cantrall in Likely, Calif and was reared on the family ranch in Jess Valley. She attended grade one through eight at the old Jess Valley Schoolhouse and graduated from Modoc High School in 1944. Barbara married George Christensen in 1944. They worked for parents, Victor and Charlotte Christensen for the H.C. She was born May 26, 1927 to James Walter and Elsie (Smith) Cantrall in Likely, Calif and was reared on the family ranch in Jess Valley. She attended grade one through eight at the old Jess Valley Schoolhouse and graduated from Modoc High School in 1944. Barbara married George Christensen in 1944. They worked for parents, Victor and Charlotte Christensen for the H.C. Cattle Company until Victor and Charlotte's deaths in 1948, when they assumed ownership with George's brother and sister-in-law, Brunell and Barbara Christensen. The two brothers and their wives owned and operated the H.C. Cattle Company until 1957 when Barbara and George bought the Bare Ranch in Eagleville and relocated their family to Surprise Valley. In 1962, George and Barbara sold the Bare Ranch and formed the Christensen and Grove Construction Company with Jerry and Virginia Grove. Barbara went to work for Sloan and Patricia Dagsen at Surprise Valley Drug in 1965. She very much enjoyed her work at Surprise Valley Drug and formed a very close lifelong friendship with the Dagsens. Her years there were among some of her fondest memories of life in Surprise Valley. In 1969, Barbara returned to the family ranch in Jess Valley. The following year, she met and married Bob Newman. They were married September 19, 1970 and lived in Reno, Nev. until they returned to the family ranch in 1973. It was at this time that Barbara formed a partnership with her daughter Robyn and son Randy and purchased Eddingfield Floral and Gifts from Cora Oxley. They operated Eddingfields until 1986. Desiring to semi-retire, Barbara worked part-time for dear friends Suzy and Bill Hamby at the Toggery until for health reasons, she retired permanently in 1994. Barbara was an accomplished seamstress and avid knitter and enjoyed cross country skiing. She enjoyed gardening and was a certified floral design artist. She also loved decorating her home. She was an active parent in the schools when her children were growing up and was past president and member of the South Fork Parent/Teachers Association from 1955-57. She was also a past president and member of the Surprise Valley Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, past member of the Order of Eastern Star, Alturas. Barbara is survived by her husband Bob of Jess Valley; mother Elsie Cantrall, Alturas; son George Fletcher Christensen and daughter-in-law Audrey of Willows, Calif.; son Randy and daughter-in-law Cathy, Alturas; daughters Terri Simpson and son-in-law Spencer of Sacramento; Kimmy Garaldon and son-in-law Larry, Mt. Shasta; son Neal Newman and daughter-in-law June of Anderson. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother Glenn Walter Cantrall in 1952; daughter Carrisa Newman in 1970; father James Walter Cantrall in 1972; and daughter Robyn Nolan in 1994. Services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ben Zandstra on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Kerr Mortuary, Alturas. Interment was in the Likely Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Modoc High School Athletic Fund.
