Description	:	Barbara Hope passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on Dec. 31, 2009, with her family by her side. She was born May 7, 1918, in Billings, to Sam E. and Carrie (Kellison) McDowell, the oldest of three sisters. Barbara spent most of her youth in Hardin and on ranches in Big Horn County where her father was employed. She was born May 7, 1918, in Billings, to Sam E. and Carrie (Kellison) McDowell, the oldest of three sisters. Barbara spent most of her youth in Hardin and on ranches in Big Horn County where her father was employed. She attended school in Hardin and later at Billings Polytechnic Institute (now Rocky Mountain College). While living with her family on the Quarter Circle Ranch (Pocket Creek Ranch) north of Hardin, she met Joe Hope. In her later years, Barbara would fondly recall the account of their first date. Before the construction of the Yellowtail Dam, the Big Horn River would freeze over in the winter.?Without a bridge for miles, driving across the ice was the quickest means of crossing. On an unseasonably warm day, Joe drove across the precariously melting ice to pick her up for a picture show in Hardin.? She would later recall with a chuckle the name of the movie they saw was?Thin Ice. Joe and Barbaras trust in the ice holding was sound, and so was their judgment when they were wed on Jan. 28, 1939. They would spend the rest of their lives together. They ranched, for a short time, on Blue Water Creek near Bridger. In November of 1944 they bought the EV Ranch in the Wolf Mountains north of Kirby, which was Barbaras home for the next 65 years. Horses were always an important part of Barbaras life. Together with Joe, they bred, raised and sold hundreds of quality colts and horses over the decades that have left a lasting legacy. As she advanced in age, Barbara always made sure that care was given to their horses. Her husband Joe; her parents; and one sister, Ora Jean Blakeley of Joliet preceded Barbara in death. Survivors include?her sister Corinna Smith of Hardin; her three sons: Eddie of Sheridan, Wyo., and Danny (Nona) and Bobby (Kathy) who live on the family ranch. She is also survived by her special granddaughter Robyn whom Barbara and Joe raised; and five grandsons: Eric, Joey, Shane, Jay and Robert as well as eight great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow the service at Buds Catering. Interment will be held at the Lodge Grass Cemetery.
