BARBARA GABEL Burleigh county lost one of its pioneer women, the mother of one of its most prominent farmer families, when Mrs. Barbara Gabel, a resident of Gibbs township since 1886, passed away at 3 o’clock yesterday morning at St. Alexius hospital. The deceased, although she was within six weeks of 79 years old, had been in excellent health until very recently, when she was seized with an attach which necessitated her coming to the hospital here for treatment. The funeral services will be held at 9:30 tomorrow morning at St. Mary’s pro-cathedral, and interment will be made in St. Mary’s cemetery. The Very Rev. M. J. Hiltner, vicar general of the Bismarck diocese, will officiate at solemn requiem mass. Barbara Mareja Gabel was born in Switzerland in 1838. AT the age of 14 she came to America, taking up her home in New York city, where as a young woman she was united in marriage with Valentine Gabel, who preceded her to the grave 17 years ago. The family resided in New York until 1886, when they came to Dakota territory, purchasing a farm in Gibbs township, where Mrs. Gabel resided until the time of her death. The sons of the family, as they arrived at manhood, purchased farms in the vicinity of the old homestead, where all of them still reside. There survive two daughters and five sons – Mrs. Lydia Graves, of Jamestown and Mrs. Hattie Steinmetz of Bismarck, and John, George, Frank, Joseph and William Gabel, all of Gibbs township. William Gabel, the youngest of the family, resided on the old home place, and his mother had made her home with him since the death of her husband. Mrs. Gabel was a woman whom her community had learned to love and her death will be mourned by many sincere friends. **The Bismarck Tribune, August 29, 1917, Page 8.
