Description	:	Barbara Specht Mahan, 63, of Farmington passed away Jan. 20, 2013 after a 15 year battle with cancer. She was born April 19, 1949 in Seward, Neb. to Verne and Wilma Specht. Barbara married Gary Cook Mahan, Ph.D. in 1999. Barbara was a beautiful pianist who loved music. She taught K-8th grade choral music for more than 20 years in the Farmington Public School System. She accompanied her students numerous times to State-wide competitions in Albuquerque, She founded the Yamaha Music in Education program and the Farmington Honor Choir. She was born April 19, 1949 in Seward, Neb. to Verne and Wilma Specht. Barbara married Gary Cook Mahan, Ph.D. in 1999. Barbara was a beautiful pianist who loved music. In 20I0, Barbara was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual New Mexico Music Educators Assoc. All-Star Music Festival. Barbara had a lasting impact on her students with whom she kept in touch. Barbara graduated from Western Michigan University in 1971 with a BFA in music. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in its Master's Program in music. She graduated from Utica High School in Michigan in 1967. She was a lover of dogs. Oskar, Felix, Spike, Josie, and Phoebe were her constant companions at different times during her life. Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Verne F. Specht and her brother-in-law, Richard DeWees. She is survived by her mother, Wilma Specht; her husband, Dr. Gary Mahan, of Farmington; brothers Monte and Allen Specht and their wives, Margie and Patricia and her nieces and nephews, Michele Akerman, Michael Specht, Nathan DeWees, Ann Chastain, Andrew and Robert Specht and Evie Roper. Barbara Specht Mahan was an extraordinary woman ... she added meaning to our lives. Memorial services will be in Lincoln, Neb. on Feb. 16. Barbara will be interred in the Seward Cemetery in Seward, Neb. Farmington memorial services are pending. Published in Farmington Daily Times from February 13 to February 20, 2013
