Barbara, daughter of Peter and Eva (Katzendorn) Spies was born on a farm near St. Peter, April 7, 1916. Read More	Barbara Loevenstein, age 98, died Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care, Quinter. Barbara, daughter of Peter and Eva (Katzendorn) Spies was born on a farm near St. Peter, April 7, 1916. As a young child Barbara’s family moved to a farm southeast of Quinter where she grew up and attended Pleasantview Rural School through the eighth grade. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and Altar Society in Collyer. On October 28, 1936 she was united in marriage to Jake C. Loevenstein in St. Michael Catholic Church, Collyer. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1998. Jake and Barbara made their first home in Park, where they lived until 1943. They moved to the farm where Barbara grew up. They farmed and raised cattle until 1959, when they moved to Quinter where they built a home on Castle Rock Street. Barbara worked 15 years as a nurse’s aide at the Gove County Hospital (now Gove County Medical Center), and was a homemaker. Jake was employed with Midwest Cooperative. Jake and Barbara loved the outdoors and camping together. Barbara enjoyed gardening, flowers, yard work, fishing, playing cards, reading and scrapbooking. Survivors include a son-in-law, Gilbert Phlieger of Lakin; daughter-in-law, Elsie Loevenstein of Quinter; five grandchildren, Eileen Loevenstein of Salina, Rick Loevenstein and wife Julie of Shawnee, Geralyn and husband Lee Elder of Wichita, Carleen & husband David Horenkamp of Miramar, Florida, Kari Loevenstein of Salina; seven great-grandchildren, Lindsay and husband Dugan Arnett, Derek, Mark and Kurt Loevenstein, Alex and Cole Elder, and Austin Horenkamp. Barbara has numerous surviving nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joan Phlieger; son, Kenneth Loevenstein; and sisters, Sophia Brown, Mary Hecker and Hilda Wasinger, and brother John Spies. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., February 25, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Collyer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday with a parish vigil service at 7:00, both at the funeral home in Quinter. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Michael Cemetery Fund or St. Michael Catholic Church.
