He was born January 27, 1920 to Cope and Gladys Shoemak near Union Mills. He married Audrey Maxine Busby on June 14, 1941; she preceded him in death on June 16, 1974. He married Frances Vander Waal Augustine on August 15, 1975 in Oskaloosa at the Oskaloosa Christian Church. As a young boy, he attended the McMain and Fairview schools, and hunted raccoon and squirrels with his father. He loved hunting, fishing, and deer hunting, of which he missed only two seasons. He had farmed near New Sharon all of his life. He was a member of the Union Mills Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Frances of New Sharon; a son, Roy Ferguson of New Sharon; a stepson and spouse, William and Mary Augustine of Rose Hill; four daughters and spouses, Peggy Heyveld of Burlington, Linda and Nathan Stouwie of New Sharon, Ruth and Wayne Hasley of Searsboro, and Luann and Craig Montgomery of Oskaloosa; three stepdaughters and spouses, Linda and Donald Joe Spears of Rose Hill, Carol and Bob Herr of Fremont, and Diane and Kevin Blake of Oskaloosa; 12 grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; five brothers and spouses, Gerald and Phyllis Ferguson, Bob and Sharon Ferguson, Jim and Nancy Ferguson, and John and Shirley Ferguson, all of New Sharon, and William "Bill" and Colleen Ferguson of Searsboro; his father-in-law, Bill Vander Waal; a brother-in-law and spouse, Roy and Bea Vander Waal; and two sisters-in-law, Gail Renaud and Donna Rempe. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, an infant son, David Earl Ferguson; and a granddaughter, Lynnett Heyveld. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Mills Christian Church, with the Rev. Kerry Lake officiating. Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery. The family will be at Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon on Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m. to great friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mahaska County or the Union Mills Christian Church.
