Description	:	Barry Donald “Coach” Schultz, 61, of Grand Island passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Third City Christian Church in Grand Island, with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Burwick Cemetery at Cairo. Apfel Funeral Home is caring for the family. Mr. Schultz was born Oct. 12, 1953, in Grand Island, the son of Donald J. and Marion I. (Dankert) Schultz. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Deb Schultz of Grand Island; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Matthew R. and Stephanie Schultz of Grand Island, and Michael J. Schultz of Grand Forks, N.D.; his father and stepmother, Don and Darlene Schultz of Grand Island; a sister and brother-in-law, Roxanne and Jerry Hoffer; and his mother-in-law, Waunita (Dainton) Axtell. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Herb McMullen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Patti Axtell; stepsisters and their spouses, Carol and Chuck Gerstung, Marcia Williams, Connie and Dan Karre, Wendy and William Barg, and Nancy and Bernie Harris; and numerous nieces, nephews, loving aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends. Barry received his early education from District No. 36 and graduated from Centura High School with the Class of 1971. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing and education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1975. He was united in marriage to Debra L. Axtell on March 22, 1975, in Broken Bow. The couple made their home in Grand Island, where be began his teaching career at Northwest High School in August of 1975, teaching business and marketing. He also was the girls basketball and golf coach. Barry retired in June 1994. After his retirement, he owned and operated “Play It Again Sports,” retiring in 2012 due to declining health. He was anxiously waiting for the arrival of his first grandson, who is due in January. He was a member of Third City Christian Church of Grand Island. He had prior association with Christ Lutheran Church of Cairo and First Christian Church of Grand Island. Barry and Deb also enjoyed the fellowship of the Destiny/Cowboy Church. He was a member of DECA, Clean Community Council and Tri-City Hockey Board, and also served on the Northwest Little League Board. He also was the voice of Northwest softball. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Schultz; a brother, Ronald Schultz; his father-in-law, Lagene Axtell; and a foster son, James McKnight.
