From Nevada Evening Journal May 7, 1941 (page 3) Final Rites Held Tuesday for Late Bartel Mathison The body of the late Bartel Mathison, 87, who died at Iowa sanitarium early Sunday morning, was laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery late Tuesday afternoon after services at the Bishop funeral home, conducted by his pastor, Dr. J. O. Simon. The bier was banked with beautiful floral offerings and the large chapel was filled to capacity by relatives and old friends and neighbors who gathered to pay a final earthly tribute of respect to one whom they had long known and respected. Scripture and prayer was by Dr. Simon followed by the reading of the brief life sketch of the deceased. In the sermon Dr. Simon paid a high tribute to the life an work of Mr. Mathison, whom he had long known as a faithful member of his congregation. The music was by Harry Christiansen at the organ and pallbearers were from among the younger generation of the Mathison family: Kermit Anderson, Harle Bishop, Lyle Baumgartner, Arthur Mathison, P. K. Mathison and Matis Mathison. The life sketch of the decease who would have been 87 years old on May 21, as prepared, and read by the minister follows: "Bartel Mathison was born in Denmark on May 21, 1854, and died May 4, 1941, at the Iowa sanitarium in Nevada. He was one of 14 children, the others having preceded him in death. "In 1877 he came to this country with his wife Christiana. To this union three children were born, Matis, Matilda and Molly. Matis died at the age of 1 1/2 years and Mollie at the age of 8 years. His wife was taken in death on Oct. 24, 1897. "In 1902 he was united in marriage to Katherine Stine. To this union two children were born, Vernon and Leo. Vernon having died at the age of eight years. The wife, Katherine, died in 1926. "He leaves in his immediate family only his daughter, Matilda now Mrs. Hans Anderson of 225 Lincoln avenue and Leo Mathison of 1704 Fifth street and a number of grandchildren. "After farming for a time he engaged in drainage contracting work, having been a surveyor in his homeland. He continued in the drainage work for many years and had a wide reputation as a competent work man. "Mr. Mathison was long a member of the Memorial Lutheran church having been brought up in that faith in his native land. "He was a man of high character, industrious, honest and upright in his business affairs, a good citizen and much beloved by his family, who will be joined in their mourning by a wide circle of friends and neighbors. "In the passing of Bartel Mathison, Nevada loses another of its oldtime Danish-American citizens--men of the finest type who made the best of American citizens." Among the out-of-town relatives in attendance at the funeral services were number of nieces and nephews of the deceased from Story City and Ames. The group included Mr. and Mrs. Matis Johnson, Mrs. Pete Paulson and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, Mrs. Ira Doolittle and son of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mathison, Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Mathison and daughter, Leota and Amiel Mathison and son Richard of Ames. Other out-of-town relatives included an uncle and aunt of Leo Mathison, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Raimer and son Albert of Minnesota. From unknown newspaper May 1941 Bartel Mathison, 86, of 1704 Fifth street, Nevada died at Iowa sanitarium early Sunday morning after a long illness of various complications incident to his advanced age. Funeral rites will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 from the Lilly funeral home with the pastor Dr. J. C. Simon in charge. Interment will follow in the Nevada cemetery. Mr. Mathison was a native of Denmark but came to the United States 63 years ago and located in Nevada. After farming for a time he engaged in drainage contracting work, having been a surveyor in the homeland. He continued in the drainage work for many years and had a wide reputation as a competent and responsible workman. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Christina Nelson, daughter of a pioneer family here. Three children were born to this union, the only surviving one being Mrs. Hans Anderson. After the death of the first Mrs. Mathison he was married to Kathryn Stine, who also preceded the husband in death, leaving one son, Leo Mathison, with whom the father had made his home much of the time during the declining years. Mr. Mathison was a long member of Memorial Lutheran church having been brought up in that faith in the land of his nativity. Pallbearers to serve at the funeral will be from amonth the younger generation of his relatives, the being P. K. Mathison, Matis Mathison, Art Mathison, Kermit Anderson, Harle Bishop and Lyle Baumgardner. Mrs. Mathison was a mean of high character, industrious, honest and upright in his business affairs, a good citizen and much beloved by his family, who will be joined in their mourning by a wide circle of friends and neighbors.
