Description	:	Barzillai Fisher Sr, son of James & Mary (Jennings) Fisher, was born on 16 Jan 1730 in Little Compton, Newport Co, RI. Numerous sources cite an erroneous birth year for Barzillai of 1726 – apparently the birth year for an older brother of the same name who died in infancy. Read More	Barzillai Fisher Sr, son of James & Mary (Jennings) Fisher, was born on 16 Jan 1730 in Little Compton, Newport Co, RI. Numerous sources cite an erroneous birth year for Barzillai of 1726 – apparently the birth year for an older brother of the same name who died in infancy. As morbid as it may seem today, it was a common practice (albeit confusing for the genealogist) in early New England to name the next child of the same gender to be born, after a deceased sibling who died in early childhood - though why they would want to recycle that particular Biblical name defies comprehension. (More incredibly, the name was passed onward to a son, Barzillai Fisher Jr, and to at least one grandson, Barzillai Fisher Cady). In the Probate Records of Little Compton, Vol I / pg 1, it is recorded that on 7 Apr 1747 “Barzillai Fisher son of James Fisher appeared & prayed that Mr George Rouse of Little Compton, RI be admitted as guardian, he being upwards of 17 years of age”, resulting in a birth year of 1730. George Rouse was his cousin, the son of James & Joanna (Fisher) Rouse (who married on 15 Mar 1703, per Newport Co, RI VRs), the sister of James Fisher. The Providence Gazette carried the death notice for “Barzillai Fisher of Killingly who died on 21 Jan 1813 in his 84th year”. (He turned 83 on Jan 16th, and on Jan 21st, he was in his 84th year, consistent with the 1730 birth year). On 03 Oct 1754, Barzillai married his first wife Lydia Dexter (1729-1790), daughter of John & Mary (Browne) Dexter of Smithfield, RI, who was in turn a descendant of the Rev. Gregory Dexter, one of the early pastors of the First Baptist Church of Providence, RI – the first Baptist church in America. To their union, 9 children were believed to have been born – to wit: 6 sons – John (1755-1843), Nathan (1757-1811), Asahel (1759-1815), Laban (1762-1782), Dexter (1769-1847) & Barzillai Jr (1774-1855), and 3 daughters – Thankful (Fisher) Lyon (1764-1851), Lydia (Fisher) Green (1767-1842), & Mary (Fisher) Cady (1772-1813), most of whom were probably born in Johnston, RI. All these children are mentioned in Barzillai Fisher's will except for Laban, who is thought to have been a causality of the Revolutionary War. (Barzillai Fisher's eldest son John Fisher had a son born in 1783, who he named Laban - presumably after John's deceased brother). Following their marriage, it is assumed that Barzillai & Lydia moved to Preston, CT, as Barzillai had purchased land there from Zechariah Rude 2 weeks earlier on 17 Sep 1754. Barzillai sold the land to Consider Tiffany on 15 Apr 1756, however, and in 1762, he was back on the RI side of the border, as “Barzillai Fisher of Johnston sold land with dwelling house to Samuel Potter of Smithfield, RI, and Barzillai's wife Lydia surrendered her right of dower and her thirds”. (From Barzillai Fisher to Samuel Potter on 3 Sept. 1762, Johnston, RI Land Records Vol. I / pp 115 & 116). In 1773, they were back on the CT side of the border. In the History of Windham Co, CT, Ellen D. Larned, states that “Barzillai Fisher of Preston secured the farm and residence left vacant by the Rev Eden Burroughs”. Per Killingly land records Vol. 9 / pp 232 & 233 dated 15 June 1773, Barzillai Fisher of Killingly, CT purchased 70 acres from Edward Davis of Oxford, MA. (The Rev Borroughs had sold the land to Edward Davis on 11 August 1772). Barzillai’s land in Killingly was located along Whetstone Brook in what is now the Cat Hollow Town Park area. On 22 May 1798, Barzillai deeded 16 acres of his land to son Dexter Fisher for consideration of 7 yrs labor, including a dwelling house - and a saw mill and a grist mill, which the Fishers presumably operated (Killingly land records Vol 15 / pp 15 & 16). During the Revolutionary War, Barzillai Fisher marched from Killingly for the relief of Boston on the Lexington alarm, a service of 7 days with the colonial militia. According to Larned’s history, 4 of Barzillai’s sons served in the military as well. Laban is thought to have died aboard a British prison ship in New York. Following the death of his first wife, Barzillai Fisher remarried, his second wife being Christina Smith, daughter of Benjamin & Mary (Winsor) Smith of Glocester, RI. Barzillai Fisher died on 21 Jan 1813 in Killingly.
