He was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Ottumwa to John and Emma Marie Hird McCarty. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded three bronze battle stars. He entered the service in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. He worked for Hall Candy Factory and later for Johnson Lawn Mower Co. He was a member of the VFW. He is survived by a brother, Orrin McCarty of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Bernie McCarty; and a sister, Mildred Millhouse. The service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Alexander Johnson Funeral Chapel, the Rev. William Flewelling of Davis Street Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military rites by O. B. Nelson Post No. 3, American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post 775 VFW. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel with family present from 4 to 6 p.m. Pallbearers will be Wayne, Phillip and Gene McCarty and Michael, Thomas and Charles Farrell.
