Unknown paper and date but most likely Herald and News KLamath Falls OR 12/23/1969 In the 1950's Bayley was owner/operator of a huge ranch (5,000+acres) just south of Alturas off Highway 395. It was the only ranch in Modoc Co that still used horse-drawn machinery to cut and stack hay. The ranch hired hobo's that came to Modoc on the railroad and put them on horse drawn mowers and buck rakes. I worked there in the summer of 1958 driving a tractor with a buck rake. He would some times hire tractors in high season. The bo's made $5 a day plus room and board. I talked to some of them and they said the ranch had the best food on the hobo circut. The kitchen was huge as was the dining room for the employees. The food was basic, steak, potatos, eggs and lots of it. The men slept in and around the barn. In 1960 the ranch was bought by the federal goverment and named the Modoc National Wildlife Refugee. It now covers about 7,000 acres of marsh, ponds and lakes. I never heard him called George. He died in Kent, England while visiting his wifes family. His middle name is spelled Bayley 1910 & 1940 Census or Bailey in other documents Bayley's first wife is a Parker. She is only listed in the 1940 census which says she lived in the same house in 1935.
