Beatrice Medford Gibson, age 89, of Waynesville, NC passed away Saturday morning following a period of declining health in a Waynesville nursing center. Beatrice Medford Gibson, age 89, of Waynesville, NC passed away Saturday morning following a period of declining health in a Waynesville nursing center. Mrs. Gibson was a native of Macon County, daughter of the late D.C. ''Dock'' and Josie Robertson Byrd and a former resident of Bryson City, NC and Winston-Salem, NC. Beatrice and her first husband, R.E. ''Elmer'' Medford, owned and operated Medford Motors in Bryson City for many years. Bea also owned and operated Bea's Beauty Shop until the early 70's. Following her husband Elmer's untimely death in 1965, she married Harris W. Gibson and moved to Winston-Salem, NC where she lived until 2001. Mr. Gibson died in 1979. Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Bryson City First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Gibson was also preceded in death by her twin brother, B.C. Byrd; brother, Paul Byrd; sisters, Della Thomas and Greer Corns; her son, Robert Harold Medford; grandson, Chris Conley and great grandson, Anthony Grassi. Mrs. Gibson is survived by her daughters, Irene Shuler of Clayton, NC, Carolyn Conley Hall and her husband, David, of Bryson City and Gwendolyn Woodard of Winston-Salem, NC; stepson, James C. Corns of Manchester, MD; brother, Robert Byrd of Bremerton, Washington; two sisters, Eleanor Rees Sutton and Faye Sheffield, both of Waynesville, NC; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, May 19, 2003 in the Chapel of Bill Moody Funeral Home, Bryson City, NC with the Rev. John Tagliarini officiating. Burial will follow at Swain Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
