Description	:	Beatrice Marie "Betty" (Ryan) Gordon, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Cloverlodge Care Center, St. Edward, Nebraska. Betty was born at Belgrade, NE on January 20, 1921 to James Curran Ryan and Ella Catharine (Schwensen) Robinson Ryan. Betty attended Happy Hollow Grade School District #64 in Nance County, 15 miles southwest of Belgrade, Nebraska. She received her first communion at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wolbach, Nebraska and was confirmed at Scotia (NE.) Catholic Church in 1934. She graduated from Cedar Rapids (NE.) High School in 1938. Betty was born at Belgrade, NE on January 20, 1921 to James Curran Ryan and Ella Catharine (Schwensen) Robinson Ryan. She received her first communion at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wolbach, Nebraska and was confirmed at Scotia (NE.) Catholic Church in 1934. She graduated from Cedar Rapids (NE.) High School in 1938. On April 26, 1941, she was married to Raymond R. Gordon at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Ray worked for Northwestern Bell and they lived in various locations such as Silver Creek, Clarks, Central City, Columbus and Grand Island, Nebraska. Ray was inducted into the Army in December, 1942 and he and Betty along with son, Michael, lived in Sacramento and Pasadena, California and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When Ray went overseas in 1944, Betty and Michael lived with her parents. During this time, she cared for her mother who was an invalid. They settled in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska in 1946 and Ray continued to work for Northwestern Bell. Betty had many leadership roles in the Cedar Rapids, Nebraska/Boone County, Nebraska community. She served as Extension Group chairman, president of the Boone County Extension Club, Tuberculosis chairman, was active with the American Legion Auxiliary, and was Boone County Auxiliary president in 1964. She was also active with the Cedar Rapids Alumni Association and was one of the members who promoted the scholarship fund. She chaired the Polio Sabin Program where 1800 area people participated in the vaccine for three consecutive months and was a member of St. Anthony's Altar Society. Betty was well known for her creativity and for over 20 years decorated for many weddings. Her originality for building elaborate business and children themed floats for the Cedar Rapids Community Picnic was enjoyed by many. She was very talented with interior design and carried this throughout her home especially during the holiday season. Betty and her husband, Ray, were recipients of the Cedar Rapids Outstanding Citizen Award in 1986. This award presented by the Community Club honored them for their multiple contributions to the community and it's citizens. Betty and Ray volunteered at the Senior Center for several years, they enjoyed visiting nursing homes around the area, and were always willing to assist those in need. In November, 2012, Betty moved to Valley View Assisted Living, Fullerton, Nebraska where she enjoyed visiting with many old and new friends. As her health declined, she was then moved August 2013 to Cloverlodge Care Center, St. Edward, Nebraska. Survivors are: children, Mick Gordon and wife, Donna of Centennial, Colorado, Trish (Patti) Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Doug Gordon of Grand Island, Nebraska and Dan Gordon and wife, Mary of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Leah Gordon, Scottsdale, Arizona, Ryan Gordon, Fort Collins, Colorado, Eric Johnson and wife, Megan, Lincoln, Nebraska, Christine Barth and husband, Adam, John and Michael Gordon of Omaha, Nebraska; great-grandchildren: Madalyn Johnson, Sammie Gordon, Ella Johnson, Will Barth, Charlotte Barth; sisters-in-law: Mrs. Bill (Bobbi) Gordon of St. Paul, Nebraska and Mrs. Chuck (Marge) Rundell of Longmont, Colorado; special cousin, Jo Kayton of Omaha, Nebraska and a host of family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by: husband, Raymond Gordon; infant son, Ricky Ray Gordon; brothers: Bill, Bernard and Carroll Ryan; half brothers, Leroy and Arnie Robinson; son-in-law Jerry Johnson and daughter-in-law Linda Gordon. A Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Interment will follow at parish cemetery.
