Civic Leader Ben Gramling Dies At 81 Gramling, SC - Ben Earle Gramling died Monday, Oct. 29, 1994 at his residence. Native of Gramling, SC and husband of Annie Lou Petty Gramling. Son of the late Ben Martin and Cora Turpin Gramling and member of Gramling United Methodist Church. He was a Dairyman and peach grower. Chairman of of the Spartanburg County Board of Control, now known as the Spartanburg County Council, in the late 1950s and 1960s. He was chairman of the Administrative Board of Gramling United Methodist Church for 27 years, and was a member of the first State Agricultural Commission, president of the S.C. Peach Council and was a member of the executive committee of the National Peach Council. He was recognized as a master breeder by the S.C. Pure Bred Dairy Cattle Association, served as president and director of the S.C. Crop Improvement Association, served on the Board of Visitors for Clemson University, was rural chairman of the United Way, was a school board trustee for District 1, a lifetime director of the National Jersey Cattle Club and served on the board of the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce. Survivors included: two daughters, Mrs. Jo Willa Gramling Lopez of New York City and Lucy Gramling Cowley of Hilton Head, SC; one sister, Mrs. Lucilla Anderson Mabry of Gramling, SC; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was 81 years of age at his demise and interment was in the Gramling United Methodist Church Cemetery. (Original obituary was rewritten to conform to Findagrave Rules by Record Hunter.)
