Ireland was born Tuesday, May 25, 1909 to Matthew and Sarah (Bainbridge) Ireland at Ellendale, North Dakota, where he lived for seven years. On March 31, 1917, the family came to South Dakota and located near Scotland. In March of 1920, the family returned to England where they lived for six months. Ireland was born Tuesday, May 25, 1909 to Matthew and Sarah (Bainbridge) Ireland at Ellendale, North Dakota, where he lived for seven years. On March 31, 1917, the family came to South Dakota and located near Scotland. In March of 1920, the family returned to England where they lived for six months. In 1921, the family returned to Scotland and rented the Samuel Livingood farm. His father died at a very young age, and Ben remained with his mother on the farm. Ben married Eleanor Benesh on June 22, 1943 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Tyndall, South Dakota. They farmed for many years prior to retiring to Scotland in July of 1974. In 1973, Ben was honored as one of the charter members who helped to establish the Livestock Feeder’s Association in the state. He also worked with the South Dakota Water Development Association for several years and was a past president of the Ft. Randall Conservancy Sub-District. Ben was a member of St. George Catholic Church in Scotland. Ben died on Wednesday December 13, 2006 at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 18 days. Grateful for having shared Ben’s life are his wife, Eleanor, of Scotland; son, Lyle and wife, JoAnne of Scotland; daughter Luetta and husband Jerry Roseth of Philip, South Dakota; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
