SERVICES FOR BEN SMITH Pioneer County Resident Dies After Two Years' Illness Ben Smith, 73, passed away early Tuesday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mart Smith, following two years of ill health and recent complications. He was born in 1865 at Wheeling, West Virginia and came to Brewster in 1901. He operated one of the finest and largest saloons in this section of the state in the early days and was one of the most colorful figures in North Central Washington in pioneer times. He married Mrs. Ruth Ann Allison in 1913 and shortly after prohibition he constructed the Cash Grocery & Market building and entered the grocery and meat business, conducting his own store until 1933 when he sold the business but retained the property. He is survived by a stepson, Carl Allison of Molson and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mart Smith, and several grandchildren through his marriage to Mrs. Allison. His granddaughters, Mrs. Ruth Russell, formerly Miss Ruth Estille of Brewster, arrived from Everett in time for the funeral. She was accompanied by her tow children and a friend, Mrs. Buchanan. Mr. Smith had been living for the past few months at Okanogan and came to live with Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Smith here and later moved to the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Mart Smith on the Okanogan river. Wife Preceded Him In Death Mrs. Ben Smith preceded her husband when she passed away about two years ago. There are several grandchildren of Mr. Smith who were related to him through his marriage late in life to Mrs. Allison. Mrs. Harry Hatch of Bremerton, Mrs. Robert Whitlinger and D. J. Smith of Brewster; Mrs. Ruth Russell, Everett and Tom A Estille, Bremerton, are Mr. Smith's grandchildren through marriage. Funeral services were held at the Community Log Church, Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. N. O. Brooks officiating. Interment was at the Locust Grove cemetery the same afternoon.
