Ben attained the age of 81 years, 4 months and 8 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Nearly fifty-four years have transpired since Mr. and Mrs. Ben Smith, Sr., began their careers as newlyweds following their marriage here. This elderly couple since has spent most of their married life in the Lennox community, with the exception of a few years. They rank among the early pioneer residents here. Mr. Smith was born in Ostfriesland, Germany, May 7, 1863 and there spent his early boyhood days. When he was 14 years of age his parents left their homeland abroad, and immigrated to the United States, settling at Ackley, IA. Here he resided for several years and during his residence there his father passed away. Mr. Smith then went to Illinois for one year, and in December, 1883 came to Lennox where he took up farming. He married October 10, 1885. His mother came here to visit and upon coming to this community made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, remaining until her death in April, 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Smith remained on their farm five miles south of Lennox for a number of years and in 1900 moved to Emery (S. D.) where they stayed four years. Following their residence there the family moved to Morton, Minn., and farmed near there for six years. In April, 1910, they returned to Lennox and have lived here since. Mrs. Smith—nee Mae Bunk— was born in Freeport, IL, July 26, 1867. Subsequently they moved to Grundy County, IA, and in 1879 the family entered Dakota Territory, settling on the W. B. Wait farm fives miles south of Lennox, where Mr. and Mrs. Smith made their home following their marriage. After only a year here, her family moved to Emery in 1880, and after five years there returned to Lennox, when she was 18 years old. Her parents, with their family, homesteaded six miles west of Emery in 1880. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both very active. Five children were born to this union, Benjamin and Corene, deceased, and Sam, of Lennox; Mrs. Jerry (Cathryn) Miller of Tripp, and Franklin of Delmont.
