Funeral service and interment was in Jellico on Saturday. ************ From The Advance-Sentinel, Jellico, TN, Friday, February 11, 1938: "Ben Adkins Is Taken By Death" Our town suffered a tragic loss when on Friday, February 4, Ben Adkins died in Knoxville General Hospital after a brief illness from spinal meningitis. He is survived by his wife, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adkins, sisters, Mrs. J. A. Petrey, Mrs. William Mullis, Misses Julia, Louise, Mildred, Mary Helen and Bettie Francis, and brothers, Boyd and Minton. Jellico people as a whole were unusually concerned over Ben's condition from the first day he was stricken, not only because of the extreme seriousness of the disease meningitis, but because Ben was a general favorite will all ages and classes of people. He was born here 28 years ago and had never lived anywhere else. His education was received in the local High School and at Union University, Jackson, Tennessee. Less than two years ago he was married to Miss Georgia Creekmore and their life together had been one of happiness and harmony. It can truthfully be said of Ben Adkins that he was a well rounded young man for he was a faithful member of the Baptist Church, an unusually capable business man, a genial friend, and an outdoor sportsman in the best sense of the term. His talents in sports such as golf, hunting, fishing, etc. were recognized through all this region and his sense of honesty and fair play was known to all those who associated with him. His funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ves Creekmore, with his pastor, Dr. Fred Kendall, in charge. A quartet composed of Mrs. Clyde Rodeheaver, Jr., Mrs. William Humphrey, Enoch Siler and Joe Alloway sang two of Ben's favorite songs, and his young cousin, Wayne Tanner of Knoxville, rendered "Sunshine Tomorrow" as a solo. The flowers sent by sympathetic friends deserve special mention both for their beauty and profusion. Pallbearers were as follows: Active: Virgil Davis, Paul Harp, Carter Broughton, Asbury Siler, Thurman Land and Bob Stout. Honorary: Saul Garber, Taylor Wilson, Sanford Broughton, Joe Snyder, Oscar Baird, Elmer Byrd, D. H. Wilhoit, Kyle Miller, Robert, Ed, and A. J. Wardrep, I. B. Lowry, Comer Franklin, Michael Kitts, Siler Kitts, Cecil Siler, Carl Ellis, Clarence Siler, Clifford Culver, and Herman Land. ***************** From the Advance-Sentinel, Jellico, TN, Friday, February 11, 1938: "To Thank Our Friends" Since it is impossible to personally thank each one who assisted us during the illness and death of our loved one, we are taking this means of expressing this gratitude which we feel.
