Description	:	Ben Schlaefli, age 74, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Monday, April 11, 2011, at his residence. A Memorial Service will be 2:00 PM on Friday, April 15, 2011, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Benedict Schlaefli was born September 29, 1936, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Robert and Iona (Llewellyn) Schlaefli. He grew up and attended school in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School. After high school he joined the National Guard and was deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He married Julie Fleege on May 6, 1957, in Yankton. He worked at the Yankton Press & Dakotan for a few years until he started working as a truck driver in 1963, for the Nickels Brothers, hauling gas. He later started driving as an owner/operator for MCT Transportation which he continued for many years, hauling for several Yankton businesses. He was very proud to have driven millions of miles without an accident. He was a member of the pistol team, while he was in the National Guard, and enjoyed reading, working in his garden, tinkering, hunting, and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes and would visit with anyone. Survivors include his wife, Julie Schlaefli of Yankton; four children: Susan Gooden of Coolidge, Arizona; Stacey (Jeff) Penniston of New Castle, Wyoming; Stephanie Schlaefli of Yankton; and Shannon Schlaefli of Yankton; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters: Alzada (Archie) Cernaghan of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Cecelia (Joe) Olsrud of LaVerne, Minnesota; and Donna (Neil) Brandon of Yankton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Pamela Schlaefli and Steven Schlaefli; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" Schlaefli and LeRoy "Roddy" Schlaefli; and two sisters, Alma Bassler and Barbara Robinson.
